Where are these properties located?
Brunswick County, conveniently located between Wilmington, North Carolina and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is the first county inside of NC on the state border. The Brunswick County barrier islands from the SC border are: Sunset Beach; Ocean Isle Beach; Holden Beach; and Oak Island. At the east end of Oak Island is the inlet to the Cape Fear River and Bald Head Island, which is accessible only by ferry from Southport. The other side of the Cape Fear River is New Hanover County. If you follow the Cape Fear River, you’ll end up in the port city of Wilmington.
Tell me about the airports.
Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR) and Wilmington (ILM) are the closest commercial airports and are less than an hour away from most destinations in Brunswick County. The Raleigh Durham Airport (RDU) is less than three hours away. If you own your own plane (I have no plane but I’ve heard tell of such folk), the private airports are Ocean Isle Beach Airport and Brunswick County Airport.

If I buy land, do I have to build right away?
In most of the communities listed here, you are not required to build within any set time frame. This is an important point: If you can buy a piece of land in a community where you might want to live in the future, you can defer the costs associated with construction. One strategy is to purchase two sites and then sell one later to defray the cost of the first property.
What are the building prices in the area?
Depending on the level of detail in a custom home, there are builders in the area that can be employed to build a home within the range of $130 – 300 per heated square foot. There are many different builders in the area; a list can be provided upon request. (Heated square footage is defined as the area in a home that is served by the HVAC system. You’ll see an extra charge for a garage or unheated bonus rooms, but the porches and exterior covered space would be included in the basic price.)
What is there to do in Brunswick County?
Even the most devout beachgoer can appreciate the wealth of other activities available in and around the Brunswick Islands. Antiques, local craft boutiques, and galleries all offer something for the casual or avid shopper. Museums and nearby sites—lighthouses, plantations, and forts—will appeal to the weekend historian and the simply curious.
With few exceptions, life in the Brunswick Islands takes place outdoors. And perfect beach weather also translates into tennis, golf, hiking, deep-sea fishing, water-skiing, kayaking, and biking. Holden Beach is a sea turtle habitat and during the hatching season (May to October) those who don’t mind staying up late at night can witness one of nature’s most interesting pleasures—watching hundreds of small sea turtles “boil” out of the sand and march to the ocean.

There are more than 100 golf courses in the tri-county area. While some of these courses offer membership packages, all of them are open to public play.
