With hundreds of places to eat in the area, residents and visitors enjoy locally grown produce, fresh local seafood, and a wide range of dining options. Included here are some of my favorite places—restaurants, casual dining spots and produce providers—from Wilmington to Myrtle Beach.

Wilmington, NC

Rim Wang – Whenever I'm craving really good Thai food, I will make a stop at this cute little restaurant on Front Street. The fried whole fish with assorted dipping sauces are highly recommended and I also enjoy their pad thai.

Circa 1922 –Named "Best Restaurant” by the Wilmington Star News, Wilmington’s original tapas-style restaurant opened in February of 2000. It has received numerous accolades, including Encore Reader’s Choice Winner for Best Appetizers & Best Atmosphere.

Caprice Bistro – An authentic French Brasserie on Market Street, one block from the river. Check out their hip lounge upstairs and enjoy cocktails while you wait for your table.

Port City Chop House – The place to go for a steak along the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington.

Southport, NC

The Pharmacy – Upscale restaurant with seasonal menu. (Visitor tip: "Upscale," in Southport, means that most people will be wearing long pants.)

The Provision Company – Very casual restaurant along the ICW in Southport. Order a burger or get a crabcake and shrimp and enjoy a beer. Inconvenient parking along the street.

Fishy Fishy – Mid scale restaurant next to the Provision Company. Great View. Good Food. Unfortunate name. Inconvenient parking.

Famous Subs – If you're looking for a sub or calzone, you found it. The place to go for good cheap eats.

Holden Beach, NC

Captain Pete’s Seafood Restaurant – The best restaurant on the island of Holden Beach on the ICW underneath the bridge. The changing seasonal menu features local catch and daily specials. Opens at 5 P.M. and limits operations during the off-season. Get there early during the summer to snare a window table overlooking the ICW. If you do have to wait for a table, there's ample seating and cold drinks at the downstairs bar.

The Provision Company – A very casual local favorite on the mainland side of the ICW at the base of the Holden Beach Bridge. Try a shrimp burger with onion rings and a cucumber salad and your favorite beverage and you will definitely be back for more.

Archibald's – Quirky sandwich shop with fresh soups or quiches every day to accompany their delicious sandwiches.

Captain Pete’s Seafood Market – This is not a restaurant, but if you like to cook, you will not find fresher fish anywhere—suppliers unload their catches daily. Depending on the season, you'll find fresh grouper, tuna, flounder, sea bass, triggerfish, shrimp, clams and soft shell crabs. All fish can be filleted or cut to order on request and they'll pack in ice to go. Call before noon and they'll peel and devein your shrimp for afternoon pick-up for just an extra $1/pound.

Ludlum’s Produce – Three miles from Holden Beach on highway 130. This is not a restaurant but if you enjoy locally grown produce, it’s a good stop. Only open during the season.

Shallotte, NC

Joe’s Barbeque – Very casual family-owned restaurant that features southeastern NC barbeque. Good cheap eats.

Bart’s Barbeque – Highway 17 around mile marker 11 just South of Shallotte. Excellent alternative to Joe’s.

Holden Brothers Farm Stand – Highway 17 around mile marker 9. This is not a restaurant, but a great place to pick up locally grown produce, honey, jellies and jams.

Ocean Isle Beach, NC

The Isle Restaurant – First Street on Ocean Isle, an upscale steak and seafood restaurant with beautiful views of the ocean.

Myrtle Beach, SC

There are many great restaurants, but I would like to highlight two. Thoroughbreds Restaurant – If you're looking for an excellent local steakhouse in the heart of Myrtle Beach, this is your destination. The escargot appetizer and the tableside Caesar for 2 are a must.

Greg Norman’s Restaurant – I was skeptical about trying this chain restaurant, but won over by the high quality food and professional service.
